Step03_gravity_incompressible.cfg

Hello,

I’m interested in looking at pressure differences due to subsurface density differences. I modified step03_gravity_incompressible to have normal VP values which resulted in a compressed domain.

We know that the displacement values are greatly exaggerated, but are the pressure values also exaggerated?

Are the pressure values affected by the domain compression?

Best,
Eddie

Hi Eddie,
I’m not quite sure what you’re trying to model, but the pressure values from your solution should be correct. If you no longer have a nearly incompressible material, you should not need the incompressible formulation. Your pressure will simply be p = -(sigma_xx + sigma_yy + sigma_zz)/3. Note that for a compressible material your values for sigma_xx and sigma_zz will no longer be rho * g * h, but will instead be a function of Poisson’s ratio.

Cheers,
Charles
