Rayleigh number from 2d-shell model

Hi everyone

How do I obtain the rayleigh number when I use the burnman.prm, which uses the ASCII material model. I included basic properties in the post processor, but there is no output for the rayleigh number.

Raleigh number is only well defined in a simple domain for an isoviscous material with very simple properties.

The BurnMan derived material model does not have these properties, neither does the Earth. There is no definition of Raleigh number for a system with heterogeneous properties and multiple length scales of convection. You could approximate a number somehow (averaging properties over the domain, perhaps), but this is not always informative. It’s much better to output something we are actually interested in (heat flow, RMS velocity etc etc).

Best wishes,
Bob
