I try to depth average “strain rate” and it seems stain rate is not in the list of output variables for depth averaging in depth_average.cc. is this right or should i be able to calculate it ?

You are correct that strain rate is currently not one of the variables that can be used with the depth average post processor..
It could be modified to process strain rate, but this might involve a bit more work compared to other variables (all are currently scalars) as the strain rate is a tensor and you would need to either calculate an invariant or calculate the average for each of the components.
