Grain size evolution and flow law parameters by composition rather than phase transition depths

Hi,

I have ASPECT simulations running with the grain size model for icy satellite conditions of a denser layer of ice overlying less dense ice in 2d box. To do this, I have two different compositions using the material file input. I want to have different grain size evolution and flow law parameters by composition but it seems the only way to do this is by depths in phase transition depths. Is there any way to do this by composition instead?

Thanks!

Hi @maxqcollins - At present the grain size evolution material model only supports solving for a single grain size.

The developer team has discussed the framework for extending this to multiple compositions, but it is currently in the conceptual stage (unless others have made progress since the last discussions).

Is something you are potentially interested in working on? If yes, it would be good to discuss this at one of the bi-weekly ASPECT user meetings.

Hi @jbnaliboff ,

Thanks for the reply! I am not sure how much time I could dedicate to It, but it would be pretty integral for future research. I would be interested in following up though to see how feasible it may be to implement.
