CIG: Thermodynamics Webinar & ASPECT Hackathon

Exploring Thermodynamic Computational Models in Geodynamics

webinar

Date: Monday, May 11
Time: 8A - noon PDT
[Register] [more info]

The tectonic and magmatic evolution of the solid Earth is fundamentally coupled to thermodynamic and petrologic processes occurring at vastly different scales. With the increasing sophistication of computational models in both mineral physics and geodynamics, our ability to simulate the coupled feedbacks between these processes has revealed new dynamics and set the stage for significant advances over the next decade.

In this special half-day webinar, we bring together authors of thermodynamic modeling codes to outline the fundamental principles of the basis of their software and describe its structure to better enable incorporation in geodynamic models.

2026 ASPECT Hackathon

Applications are now open to attend the 2026 ASPECT Hackathon

Dates: July 20-31
Location: Liensfeld, Germany

To further the development of the mantle convection code ASPECT and its user community, current users and developers of ASPECT will be working side-by-side over an approximately 10-day period. Participants will make significant progress on the development of ASPECT itself, focusing on developing features and code maintenance that address the needs of the larger community.

Please see the website for more information and application link.

Many thanks to GEOMAR for sponsoring this year’s hack.

Applications Closes: April 31 or when full
Notification of Acceptance Begins: April 15
Limit: 24 participants

Please read through all event details before beginning the application process. All participants are expected to abide by the CIG Code of Conduct .
