Session Description:
DI011: Mantle Dynamics and Seismic Anisotropy: Observations, Models, and Experiments

“Understanding mantle dynamics is a fundamental goal of solid Earth science. However, it has also posed a major challenge due to the inaccessibility of the Earth’s interior and uncertainties in observations, models, and experiments. Recent advances in measuring seismic anisotropy have generated new constraints on mantle dynamics, including subduction zone processes, lithospheric deformation, mantle circulation, and core-mantle boundary processes. Novel modeling techniques now enable the simulation of dynamic processes in the Earth’s mantle at unprecedented resolution. Finally, experimental advances are enabling new laboratory constraints on the deformation and rheology of mantle materials at relevant temperatures and pressures. As a result of these combined efforts, new perspectives are emerging on the dynamic evolution of the Earth’s mantle. We invite submissions on the deformation and structure of the mantle from seismic and MT measurements, experimental and computational constraints on deformation and rheology, and geodynamic modeling studies.”
