Adding random thermal noise at the initial timestep

Hi all,
I wonder if we can add random thermal noise at the initial timestep in ASPECT because we want to make it easier to create small-scale convection.

Hi Ziqi,

Thanks for posting this on the forum! I believe the only option that is readily available in ASPECT to add thermal noise would be to use the Random Gaussian perturbation temperature model, which you can find in the manual here. You can composite this random perturbation on top on another initial temperature field by specifying multiple temperature models in the List of model names parameter. Within the Random Gaussian perturbation, you can also control the amplitude, the size, and the number of perturbations. I hope this helps!
