2 Open Positions in Geodynamic Modelling using ASPECT at GFZ Potsdam, Germany

Dear all,

I am happy to advertise 2 fully funded positions in the “Geodynamic Modelling Section” at GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany.

(1) Postdoctoral researcher (f/m/x) – Geodynamic modelling of CO2 emissions in continental rifts: Postdoctoral researcher (f_m_x) – Geodynamic modelling of CO2 emissions in continental rifts: GFZ

Outline: In the framework of the recently funded ERC Consolidator project EMERGE, we will combine geodynamic models with new multi-scale CO2 flux measurements in East Africa and Europe. In particular, we will employ the geodynamic modelling software ASPECT to account for relevant processes of lithosphere deformation and carbon transport including faulting, ductile deformation, partial melting, melt ascent, and CO2 degassing. By accounting for lithospheric architecture, volcano-tectonic observations and measured CO2 fluxes, we aim to isolate the relative impact of geodynamic processes and lithospheric properties on rift-related CO2 release through space and time.

Your responsibilities:
• Development of numerical models to simulate melting, melt ascent and CO2 degassing in continental rifts
• Conduct generic and specific models to investigate the impact of compositional, thermal, and mechanical lithosphere characteristics on CO2 release
• Voluntary participation in the project’s field trips to sites in East Africa and Europe

Your qualifications:
• Master`s degree (or equivalent) and a PhD in Earth Sciences, Physics, or Engineering
• Extensive experience and knowledge in the development and use of numerical models based on the solution of partial differential equations, preferentially of ASPECT
• Experience in geodynamic modelling, preferentially rift tectonics or two-phase flow

Start date: May 1st 2024 (a few months earlier or later are negotiable)
Duration: 2+2 years
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)” (i.e. official German Postdoc salary)
Place of work: pretty Potsdam, Germany (short train ride to Berlin)
Application Deadline: 6th of December 2023

(2) Research software engineer / Postdoctoral researcher (f/m/x) – Coupling of research software to model solid Earth processes across the scales: Research software engineer / Postdoctoral researcher (f_m_x) – Coupling of research software to model solid Earth processes across the scales: GFZ

Outline: Solid Earth dynamics is governed by complex multi-scale processes. GFZ researchers have successfully advanced forward modeling of solid Earth processes like lithosphere deformation, magmatism, erosion, sedimentation, fluid flow and associated mass and energy transport. This project aims at linking our existing software packages to elucidate feedbacks between these processes. The project will bridge modelling efforts between five GFZ Sections. You will work in a broad and vibrant international team covering both fundamental and applied research questions. Host group will be the Geodynamic Modelling Section.

Your responsibilities:
• Building a coupling infrastructure aimed at integrating existing software packages for thermomechanical, hydrothermal, magmatic and surface processes
• Support ongoing and future scientific projects through the new coupling framework. These projects focus on tectono-magmatic interaction in rift systems; formation of magmatic-hydrothermal and sediment-hosted ore deposits; feedbacks between erosion and mountain building; as well as geodynamic effects on fault criticality in geothermally prospective rift systems.
• Optimizing the functionality of the coupling framework based on regular interaction with modelling experts from involved GFZ sections

Your qualifications:
• Master`s degree (or equivalent) in geophysics, computational science, or a closely related field (a doctoral degree is of advantage but not a strict requirement)
• Extensive experience in software development with C++ and Python
• Experience in HPC computing with applications in Earth Sciences

Start date: May 1st 2024 (a few months earlier or later are negotiable)
Duration: 3 years
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. (i.e. official German Postdoc salary)
Place of work: pretty Potsdam, Germany (short train ride to Berlin)
Application Deadline: 6th of December 2023

Note that the selection processes of both positions are independent. If you are interested in both positions, please apply to each of them individually through the given links on the websites.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
All the best,
Sascha
