Description
The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University located in Palisades, New York, invites applications for a Postdoctoral or Associate Research Scientist position in geodynamic modeling. The position is associated with the project entitled Modeling Earth from Atomic to Global Scale (MINERALS) funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. The successful candidate will use the mantle convection code ASPECT to better understand the chemical composition and dynamics of Earth’s interior. Convection simulations will be run using input from ab initio mineral physics calculations and seismic tomography in close collaboration with other researchers on this project. Output from simulations will be compared to surface observations.
Qualifications
- Experience in modeling mantle convection or other geodynamic processes using ASPECT or a comparable code is required, as well as advanced programming skills.
- Prior experience in one or more of the following is a plus: mineral physics, seismology, geology, or data assimilation.
- Evidence of the ability to conduct and publish high-quality research is desired.
Candidates for the rank of Postdoctoral Research Scientist should have recently completed or be nearing completion of a PhD in geophysics with a focus on geodynamics. Additional experience as a postdoctoral research scientist can be advantageous. Staring salary is $71,050.
Candidate for the rank of Associate Research Scientist must have PhD and at least (2) years of relevant post-PhD experience. Salary range: $80,000 - $90,000.
The position is presently funded for one year, with a possible extension to three and a half years. The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled.
