Curious to understand how the atmosphere above your head kneads the Earth’s crust beneath your feed?
A summary of what we plan to do:

We will investigate local deformation of the Earth’s crust induced by atmospheric loading. This is a major mechanism for rotational and horizontal component background noise in the normal mode band, for which we plan to develop mitigation procedures. We will deploy a large-N array of autonomous barometers in the vicinity of Black Forest Observatory (BFO). This shall provide unique insights into the dynamics of the local atmosphere with a temporal and spatial resolution not previously available. From the data obtained in this way parametric descriptions of time-varying lateral gradients of air-pressure shall be derived. These gradients contribute to crustal deformation. The resulting local rotation of sensors in the observatory is sensed as a disturbance due to tilt-coupled gravity and shall be explained in a quantitative, deterministic way by the barometric time series. In the long term, this is intended to improve the quality of normal mode observations by means of a signal correction.
